DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 5, 2017) – Bobby Pierce dominated the Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models in the Short Track Challenge at the Davenport Speedway, Friday. Known as “the Smooth Operator” in racing circles, the Oakwood, Illinois driver lived up to the title, leading the last twenty-six laps of the 40-lap feature.
Pierce started on the outside pole, but was forced to follow Tony Jackson Jr. for the first fourteen laps of the race. Pierce used the high side of the track to get by Jackson in lapped traffic. Chris Simpson, who started fifth, also passed Jackson a couple laps later. Simpson was able to get beside Pierce in the remaining laps, but would have to settle for second.
Jimmy Mars made a late race charge to take third. Jackson and Jesse Stovall completed the top five.
Pierce, Stovall, Jackson, and Tyler Bruening won the late model heats. Rodney Sanders won the B-Main.
The Eriksen IMCA Modified main had a little bit of everything, including a surprise finish. After the original start was wiped out by a yellow flag, Rick Hixson jumped out to the early lead from the third starting position. Hixson survived several challenges and a couple restarts.
On the final lap, Hixson left a little room on the bottom in turn two. When Rob Toland tried to fill the hole, the two made contact with Hixson’s car going around and bringing out the yellow. Both drivers were put to the back, giving the win to Eric Barnes.
Matt Werner was scored second with Mitch Morris third. Jason Pershy and Darin Duffy finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Thirty-three mods were on hand. Duffy, Toland, Pershy, and Bob Dominacki won the heats. Stephan Kammerer and George Spence III won the B-Mains.
Cary Brown finally ended his dry spell in Koehler Electric Street Stock action. Cary drove from fifth starting spot to first on the first lap. A series of cautions set up a four-lap dash to the checkers. Brown managed to fight off the high side charge of Dwayne Smith Jr., to take the win. Smith took second with Jeff Struck Jr. taking third. Eric Sanders and Gene Ehlers rounded out the first five finishers.
Tony Olson continued his reign in the Hawkeye Auto IMCA SportMods. After Randy Farrell and Ben Chapman each had a turn at the lead, Olson grabbed the top spot just before halfway. Olson held on for the win in the race that was shortened by cautions.
Justin Veloz took second, holding off Dustin Schram. Chapman finished fourth, followed by Dave Engelkens.
The racing action continues next Friday, May12th, at the Davenport Speedway. All four weekly classes will be in action. Our guest class for the evening will be the American Iron Racing Series.
