DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 24, 2013) – Darin Duffy now has another fond memory of the Davenport Speedway. Duffy won a Deery Brothers Late Model race at Davenport several years ago. Friday night, the Hazelton, Iowa racer added an epic win in the IMCA Modified Madness 50.

Duffy started third and took the lead on lap two from Cayden Carter. Duffy, Carter, and Richie Gustin would soon be locked in a battle for the lead that lasted for about 15 laps. When the caution flag flew on lap twenty, it was for Duffy, who had to restart at the rear of the field.

Gustin, who had started 13th, took over the lead and would top the field until lap 38. Duffy had quickly worked his way back through the field and re-took the lead. Gustin and Duffy continued to battle until the final lap, when Gustin’s racecar erupted into flames coming out of turn four.

Duffy claimed the victory. Kelly Meyer passed the slowing Gustin for second. Gustin blazed across the finishline for third, followed by Steve Stewart and Dan Klatt.

IMCA Modified heat wins went to Carter, Tony VonDresky, Joe Beal, and Ray Cox Jr. The two semi-features were won by Richie Gustin and Colt Mather.

Justin Kay of Wheatland, delivered a stellar performance in the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature. Kay’s visit to victory lane comes on the heels of two top five finishes at last weeks’ half-mile special.

Andy Nezworski led the first three laps of the late model race before yielding to Rob Toland. Toland would hold the lead for the next eight circuits, when Kay grabbed the lead. Once out in front, Kay drove away from the field, en route to the checkers.

Toland finished second with Nezworski third. Todd Malmstrom and Ray Guss Jr. rounded out the top five.

Cary Brown captured a long awaited feature win in the Koehler Electric Street Stock main. Brown took off from his front row starting spot and never looked back. Behind Cary was an intense battle for second place. Gerald Ward worked his way to the runner-up spot but needed a few more laps to mount a challenge for the lead. Dan Anderson finished third, followed by Jeremy Gustaf and Chad Coyne.

Austin Moyer made his Davenport debut pay off, by taking the win in the Hawkeye Auto IMCA SportMod feature. Bryce Garnhart led the first nine laps of the race, with Eric Pollard in front on lap ten. Moyer squeezed his way to the lead on the next lap and went on for the victory. Garnhart took second, followed by Ryan Schilling, Eric Pollard, and Jarrett Franzen.

Aaron Hitt added another victory to collection in the Roto-Rooter 4-Stocks. Aaron took the lead from Gage Neal on lap three and led the rest of the way to the checkers. Zach Dahl made a late charge to finish second. Neal finished third, ahead of Mike Morrow and Wade Dahl.

Next Friday, May 31st, is Kile Motorsports Night at the Davenport Speedway. It is also the first Kid’s Night of the season, as the races on May 10th were rained out.

DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 17, 2013) – Late Model race fans were seeing double Friday night at the Davenport Speedway. The racetrack played host to both the Corn Belt Clash Late Model Series and IMCA Late Models, with all the action taking place on the half-mile oval.

Jason Feger was the big winner in the Corn Belt Clash-Karsyn’s Krusaders 40. Feger used lapped traffic to take the top spot away from Andy Eckrich on lap 16. Once in front, the Bloomington, Illinois driver would lead the rest of the way to the checkers and the $3,000 payday.  Andy Eckrich would hold on to the second spot, despite several challenges from his brother Denny, who finished third. Ray Guss Jr. was the top local finisher, taking fourth ahead of Justin Kay.  Skip Frey, Andy Eckrich, and Rich Bell won the CBC heat races. Andy Eckrich also won the Fast Dash.

In the IMCA Late Model feature, Tom Darbyshire made the trip from Yarmouth, Iowa a good one as he ended up in victory lane. Andy Nezworski started on the pole and led the first thirteen laps. Darbyshire worked Nezworski high and low, before taking the lead for good, on lap 14. Nezworski held on for second, with Nate Bueseling finishing third. Mike Murphy Jr. and Justin Kay rounded out the top five.

Drivers from four states took part in the event. Justin Kay, Ray Guss Jr., and Spencer Diercks all did double duty, competing in both late model classes.

Steve Stewart of Burlington, came away with the feature win in the IMCA Modified main, which wasn’t kind to the race leaders. Early race leader, Rich Smith brought out the yellow flag on lap eight. On the restart, Kelly Meyer went out the front, until he was the reason for the cautions at lap 13.  Stewart and Tim Arp would exchange the lead a couple of times over the last two laps, with Stewart leading at the checkered flag.  Arp would finish in the runner-up spot.  Eric Barnes, Craig Crawford, and Brian Bushong completed the top five.

Jeremy Marquette took all of one corner to take the lead of the Street Stock feature from the fourth starting spot. Marquette led the rest of the way to the checkers. Cary Brown was best of the rest, finishing second. Ron Turner, Rob Nylin, and Marcus Ostofi, passéd around third place until they finished third through fifth, in that order.

Joe Zrostlik came back to the 4-Stock class and came away with the checkered flag. Zrostlik and Aaron Hitt put on a great side-by-side show for three laps, before Joe took the lead for good and the victory. Hitt held on for second, with Steven Phillips third, Scott Wolfe and Allen Morris finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Next Friday, May 24th, will bring the IMCA Modified Madness 50 to the Davenport Speedway. $2,000 will go to the winner of the 50-lap main. Weekly point races will be held in the other classes.

The track originally opened as a ½ mile speedway, lacking the smaller 1/4 mile. In 1953, it became the first Iowa race track to host a NASCAR sanctioned event, holding a race for what is now the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Fifty years later, the pits are now filled with late models, modifieds, street stocks and four stocks anxious to take to the dirt surface.

The new season begins with 3 special events at the top of the racing schedule. Opening night the speedway will be occupied by the Sprint Invaders traveling series. The following weekend brings the Corn Belt Clash Late Model Series and on April 19th the Deery Brothers Summer Series drivers enter the Davenport Speedway gates.  The Koehler Electric Season Points opener is scheduled for April 26th.
